BIO
Gu Hualei is a Chinese-born artist currently based in Toronto, Canada. Her artistic journey began in her teenage years in China, where she cultivated a deep interest in Japanese illustration, traditional symbolism, and animated art. These early influences laid the foundation for her creative expression and storytelling.
In 2013, Hualei relocated to Canada, where she began exploring a wide range of artistic mediums, including watercolor, ink, clay, and acrylic. This experimentation enriched her artistic vocabulary and honed her drawing techniques. After graduating from Columbia International College, she pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an Honours Specialization in Studio Art at Western University. During her studies, she delved into Western art history and further developed her unique artistic voice, blending her passion for fantasy with a thoughtful interplay between futuristic themes and traditional art forms. It was also during this time that she transitioned her focus from hand-drawn to digital art.
After earning her degree from the University of Western Ontario, Hualei expanded her skills by completing a Game Art and Animation program at Seneca College. This immersive experience introduced her to the world of 3D art, enabling her to seamlessly merge her 2D expertise with 3D techniques.
Today, Gu Hualei is a versatile artist proficient in creating both 2D and 3D artwork. Her work explores themes of science fiction, fantasy, symbolism, and traditional concepts, often weaving together elements of Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Through her art, she continues to push the boundaries of imagination, creating thought-provoking and visually captivating pieces.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My artistic journey is a continuous exploration aimed at unveiling the essence of our true selves. Through my work, I invite viewers to embark on a thought-provoking journey, delving into profound questions such as “What builds up who we are?” and “What does it mean to be human?”
I seek to capture the multifaceted nature of our existence. My subject matter spans the spectrum, from the human form to animals and mythology, reflecting the rich tapestry of human experience.
In the creative process, I surrender to the whims of my imagination and the depths of my subconscious, allowing them to guide my artistic endeavors. I employ a dynamic interplay of contrasting colors and bold brushstrokes, deliberately blurring the boundaries between the realm of fantasy and the tangible world. In doing so, I embark on a quest to explore the intricate intersections of social, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions of human nature.
